Renton business leaders welcome new teachers to district

Annual New Teacher Breakfast also creates connections between teachers and local business leaders

August 26, 2010 - Nearly 40 new teachers this morning were welcomed to the Renton School District at the 21st Annual New Teacher Breakfast hosted by the Renton Chamber of Commerce. Business leaders fund and participate in the annual event to welcome new teachers into the district while also letting teachers know that families, businesses and communities value and appreciate the work done by teachers to prepare young people for a successful future.

Renton's new teachers include those who have recently graduated from college; those who have started a new line of work and entered teaching after a successful career in other professions; and, those moving into the district from other states. One such teacher is Adam Swinney, the new 8th-grade language arts teacher at Dimmitt Middle School, who moved to Renton after teaching high school English for three years in the Chicago Public School system.

Teachers at the event, hosted and catered by Renton Technical College, were treated to a full breakfast and a presentation keynoted by Dean Allen, CEO of renton-based McKinstry, a consulting, construction, energy, and facility services company. The new teachers were also presented a "goodie bag" filled with items from local businesses.

Local businessman Bob Bridge, president of Bob Bridge Toyota | Scion, Renton, surprised new teachers with a donation of $50 each to help offset costs that teachers inescapably incur when purchasing classroom materials or snacks for students. The donation came courtesy of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation.

This year's special guests: National Board Certified Teachers

Special guests at today's event were Renton School District's nearly 40 National Board Certified teachers. National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.
